Moles – Your Lawn’s Worst Nightmare

Learn how to rid your lawn of these pests

You’ve worked all year to keep your lawn perfectly manicured, and all of a sudden you see a strange pile of dirt or even just raised piece of grass in strange tunnel pattern. Odd, but when you look further you realize these mounds of dirt or raised grasses are hollow once you step on them – a sure sign of mole activity. Each day you wake up you find more evidence of this type of mole activity. What do you do?

Before you throw your hands up and give up, let’s learn more about moles.

  • Moles are insectivores. They feed off of ants, insect larvae, and their favorite, earthworms.
  • Moles do not eat your plants, but when creating tunnels, they indirectly cause damage to the root system of your lawn.
  • Moles are active when the ground is quiet – 2 – 7 AM, 11 AM – 4 PM and 8 – 11 PM.
  • Moles are most active in the spring, summer, and fall.
  • Moles dig tunnels to travel and feed. Consider their tunnels like highways to their homes.
  • Moles can dig 18 feet per hour.

Now, here are three ways to get rid of moles in your yard, starting with the most effective way:

  1. Traps. You can buy traps in most local hardware stores. Before setting the trap, remember they can be dangerous to children and pets in the area. Once your lawn is free from children and pets, be sure to set the trap in correct spot. Also, we recommend setting multiple traps to have a better chance.
  2. Mole Bait. Bait can also be found at local hardware stores and looks similar to earthworms! Mole bait works quickly and can kill these pests within 24 hours.
  3. Call a Professional. Due to the complex issues moles can cause to your lawn, sometimes calling in a pro is your best bet. Call in a local pest control services company and have them get to work right away!
