Lawn Aeration Best Practices
As the weather starts to change and grass growth slows down, many homeowners shift gears from summer lawn care to prepping their yard for the coming winter and spring. And when it comes to fall lawn care, lawn aeration should be at the top of your list.
At Pure Green, we’ve been aerating lawns all around Nashville for years, so we’ve learned what works and what doesn’t work when it comes to aeration. Here are a few things to keep in mind.
Traditional or Liquid Aeration? It’s Up to You
We’ve been doing traditional aeration for a long time, and we’ve recently started offering liquid aeration as well. The good news is, both options can provide excellent results for your lawn. Here are a few of the things we love about liquid aeration:
-
No mess: Because liquid aeration uses water to loosen up the soil, you don’t get a yard full of the small dirt plugs created by traditional aeration.
-
100% coverage: Every square inch of your lawn gets the nutrients, sunlight, and water it needs.
-
Safe: With liquid aeration, there’s no need to avoid electric fences, irrigation systems, or other similar features of your landscaping.
Fall Is Best
While some types of aeration can be effective during other seasons, autumn is your best bet for aerating your lawn. This creates a solid foundation for your yard as you look ahead to the spring growing season. Fall lawn aeration improves the health of your yard by:
-
Reducing soil compaction, which improves drainage
-
Increasing the flow of water, air, and nutrients to the roots of your grass
-
Strengthening and deepening the root system
Aerate and Over-Seed Together
Over-seeding in the fall is a great way to set your yard up for success next spring. And the best time to over-seed is right after you’ve aerated.
The holes created by aeration become the perfect nests for the new seed to grow. The grass seeds will soak up the available water, oxygen, and nutrients from the openings and starve out the weed seeds that attempt to germinate.
Over-seeding can also help keep your grass greener through the winter months, make your lawn more drought tolerant, and create thicker, more comfortable turf.
