It’s Time to Fertilize Your Lawn
The end of November is nearly here. We’ve already started feeling the cold, winter air in the last few weeks here in Nashville. While your first instinct might be to stay inside and curled up with a warm blanket, we encourage you to get outside and do a little lawn care TLC before the winter season is officially here. Why? Because now is the ideal time to fertilize your lawn.
Benefits of Applying Fertilizer in Late Fall
The intense summer heat has come and gone, which means your lawn is recovering from any heat or drought damage from the season. It needs fertilizer to restore any nutrients that were lost. By fertilizing your lawn in November, you’re allowing the soil to absorb those nutrients from the mix throughout the winter. It will also allow for a healthy root system. Come spring, you’ll be seeing great green grass!
Timing is Everything
When it comes to late fall fertilization, you need to act quickly. Applying it too early or too late could result in winter mold growths and diseases. There’s no benefit to using fertilizer on ice or light snow because the soil is not receiving the nutrients it needs.
So, how can you get it just right? Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Apply fertilizer 2-3 weeks before the first frost.
- Fertilizing is best in the early morning or early evening.
- Mow the lawn right before you fertilize (and leave grass clippings behind!).
- Avoid fertilizing before a heavy rainfall.
